I just read the interview and loved it! My sister and I (native Angelenos as well) also own an eco-friendly stationery company (http://www.green-fingerprint.com if you get a minute and want to check us out!). We've considered attending the NSS, and have been batting around cost, time, etc. Great to hear advice from a first-timer! Good luck!
